What Digitel announced

Venezuelan media reported the official statement from Digitel published this Tuesday. According to El Nacional, the operator explained that satellite messaging with Starlink Mobile is a measure adopted after the earthquakes of June 24, when Telecommunications infrastructure suffered serious damage in La Guaira and surrounding areas.

«Your connectivity is our priority: we are enabling satellite text messaging with Starlink Mobile. From this moment, users who are in the state of La Guaira will be able to send and receive text messages completely free of charge. You do not need a balance or prior configuration. “Just make sure you are in an open space, under the sky, and your LTE phone will automatically connect to the SpaceX network, to communicate with those you need most.”

EntornoInteligente adds that the information was also disseminated through Digitel's official Instagram account, where the company stressed that the service works through technology Starlink Mobile from SpaceX and that users only need to be in an open space with a LTE compatible phone.

How Starlink Mobile works (direct SMS to mobile)

Unlike the Starlink residential kit—antenna + Wi-Fi router—, Starlink Mobile (also known as Direct to Cell) allows compatible LTE phones to connect directly to SpaceX satellites to send and receive text messages, without installing additional hardware. The phone automatically switches to the satellite network when conventional cell towers do not respond.

For reliable satellite SMS, Starlink recommends:

  • Be in a place with a clear view of the sky (indoors, basements or narrow alleys reduce the signal).
  • Use a smartphone with LTE bands compatible with the agreement between the operator and Starlink.
  • Wait a few seconds for the device to detect the satellite network before sending the message.

The service in La Guaira covers only SMS for now; It is not a substitute for voice calls or high-speed mobile data in all scenarios. Its value in an emergency is to maintain a minimum channel of communication with family members, rescue coordinators and emergency services.

Panorama between Venezuelan operators

The activation for Digitel comes days after Movistar enabled the same type of service in La Guaira. According to Banking and Business, Starlink announced in Digitel and Movilnet users "as soon as possible."

With this Tuesday's confirmation, Digitel joins the satellite backup network in one of the areas most affected by the seismic doublet. Movilnet—the state operator—is still pending activation according to previous Starlink announcements. MARGENEZ will update this section when there is official confirmation.

Context: telecommunications after the earthquake

The earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 on June 24 destroyed buildings, damaged roads and affected telecommunications infrastructure in La Guaira, Maiquetía and the metropolitan area of Caracas. The official balance cited by El Nacional already exceeded 1,700 deaths and more than 5,000 injuries at the end of June.

In this scenario, satellite connectivity – both Starlink internet with fixed terminals and mobile SMS – has become a critical backup channel. SpaceX already offers free Starlink service until July 25 for affected customers in Venezuela, complementing these alliances with local mobile operators.
