This Wednesday, June 24, 2026, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 shook the northern coast of Venezuela, followed seconds by another earthquake of 7.2. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) located the main epicenter 23 km southeast of Yumare, at a depth of 10 km. The US Tsunami Warning Center (NOAA) ruled out any tsunami threat to the Caribbean.
USGS and NOAA verified data
The USGS recorded two large-magnitude seismic events in an interval of less than a minute:
- M7.5 — Jun 24, 2026, 18:05:12 UTC. Epicenter: 23 km southeast of Yumare. Depth: 10.0 km. Coordinates: 10.5° N, 68.4° W.
- M7.2 — Jun 24, 2026, 18:04:33 UTC. Epicenter: 24 km northeast of San Felipe. Depth: 21.9 km.
The USGS revised the magnitude of the main event upward to 7.5, as reported by AZ Intel minutes after the earthquake. The official map shows both epicenters concentrated in the central-northern region of the country, with intensities that would have been strongly felt in Caracas and coastal towns.
EFE Noticias specifies that the two earthquakes were separated by just 39 seconds, with the epicenter of the main event in the municipality of Montalbán, Carabobo state, about 300 km east of Caracas.
At 23:17 UTC, NOAA issued the message «Non-US Caribe Threat #3» concluding: «No Tsunami Warning, Advisory, Watch, or Threat». There is no tsunami warning in effect for the Caribbean region or adjacent coasts.

International context — earthquake in Japan
Shortly after the seismic sequence in Venezuela, an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 shook the northern coast of Japan in the early hours of Thursday, June 25 (local time), according to Informa Cosmos with data from the Japan Meteorological Agency and the USGS. At the moment, no casualties or major damage have been reported in Japan. The two events are independent from a geological point of view; MARGENEZ mentions them only as a context for global seismic activity in the same hours.
