Amazon announced that it is supporting nonprofit organizations on the ground following the devastating consecutive earthquakes that hit northern Venezuela, the most intense the country has recorded in a century. The earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, near the capital Caracas, left hundreds dead and affected more than 6 million people, according to official statement from About Amazon published by the company's Disaster Relief team.
Priority: safety of employees and partners
Amazon indicated that its first priority is the safety of employees and partners in the region. The company maintains a 24/7 operation that issues alerts and updated information in the event of severe events to guide operational decisions, in addition to an emergency relief fund for impacted workers.
«As the situation evolves, we remain committed to supporting our employees and the broader community affected by these devastating earthquakes. We will continue to work closely with community partners and humanitarian organizations to provide additional support in the coming weeks. We encourage everyone to prioritize safety and follow the instructions of local emergency authorities.
Donations to six frontline organizations
As Venezuela's main airport recovers, Amazon is donating to six nonprofit organizations providing urgent humanitarian aid in the country, including food, medical care and other essential services:
- Airlink
- American Red Cross (American Red Cross)
- International Medical Corps
- International Organization for Migration (IOM / IOM)
- World Central Kitchen
- World Food Program (WFP)
Emergency supplies and logistics network
Amazon works with first responders, NGOs, and humanitarian aid agencies in Venezuela to coordinate the donation and delivery of emergency items: blankets, hygiene products, and other basic goods.
The company has Disaster Relief centers stocked with emergency supplies to send help “as quickly as possible” when the main transportation routes in Venezuela reopen. It uses the same rapid delivery network and technology it uses for everyday parcels to bring essential items to its partners on the ground.
