Goodbye to records: digital only from January 2028
In PlayStation.Blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment confirms that it will stop manufacturing game discs for all new titles released on PlayStation consoles from January 2028. From that date on, the releases will be available "on the PlayStation Store and at retailers only in digital formats."
The company emphasizes that the transition does not affect games that have already been released or are scheduled to be released before January 2028 in disc format. That is to say: the titles of 2027 – including major annual franchise releases – could continue to have a physical edition if Sony or third parties decide before the cut.
Sid Shuman, senior director of content communications at SIE, calls the move “a natural direction” given the public's preference for digital content, which “far surpasses” physical discs. The official pitch is to align with how “most of our community” accesses and plays games today.
What happens with the boxes in the store?
Sony does not detail whether it will completely abandon physical retail. After the controversy of GTA 6 —whose "physical edition" will include a download code and not a disc—, analysts such as Game File and Polygon speculate that, after 2028, stores could continue selling boxes with digital codes or redemption cards, not discs with game data. The BBC confirms that Sony plans to continue selling games in stores, but with digital code on the box.
Context: the “game sharing” video that has aged poorly
In 2013 Sony mocked the Xbox One's digital restrictions by showing how to "borrow" a game on disc; The clip exceeds 20 million views and today contrasts with the shift towards 100% digital. Source: PlayStation — YouTube (E3 2013)
For collectors and preservationists of the medium, the announcement is a blow: after 32 years since the debut of PlayStation in 1994, Sony stops producing the support that defined generations of consoles. TechCrunch notes that the change reflects a sectoral trend, but recognizes the "bittersweet" component for those who value physical editions.
Implications for PS6 and units with reader
Several analysts—including Piers Harding-Rolls (Ampere Analysis), cited by Game File—interpret the calendar as a sign that PS6 would not arrive before 2028 and that the base version of the next console would not include a disc reader, reducing hardware costs. That would raise questions about the library of PS5 discs that many users are amassing today.
Closing of the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita
The second statement, in the official blog, confirms the closure of the digital store on two platforms that have been supported for almost two decades. Once the store closes in each region, new content cannot be purchased on PS3 or PS Vita.
Sony attributes the decision to the PS3 and Vita no longer being able to meet modern e-commerce standards, including those for payment processing. It is the second time that the company has tried to shut down these stores: in 2021 it backed down under pressure from players; In 2026 the message is that the closure is definitive.
Calendar by region
- Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua — PlayStation Store on PS3: closure as of August 2026.
- Other countries in Latin America and the Middle East — PlayStation Store on PS3: closure from end of 2026.
- Rest of countries — PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita: closing in July 2027.
For those who have already purchased games or digital DLC, Sony promises that you will continue to be able to download purchased content "for the foreseeable future" after the closing date in your country. There is no indefinite guarantee: it is best to back up digital libraries before servers become unavailable.
Kotaku warns that many PS3 and Vita titles will be inaccessible to new buyers, since PS5 does not offer native compatibility with those generations. Exclusive or non-reissue games on PS4/PS5 will depend on physical copies used or preservation by the community.
Two announcements, one day
The double news comes days after Rockstar confirmed that GTA 6 will not have a disc in its boxed edition. The timing reinforces Sony's narrative toward an almost entirely digital ecosystem, while shutting down legacy infrastructure that it can no longer keep up with payment regulations.
For players in Latin America, the calendar is especially relevant: several countries in the region will see the PS3 store close before the rest of the world, and in July 2027 the Vita store will also be shut down in all remaining territories.
In summary
When do discs end? Production of discs for new games ends in January 2028. What about the games I already have? Those released or planned before that date are not affected. When does the PS3/Vita store close? Between August 2026 (Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua) and July 2027 (global closure of PS3 and Vita in the rest). Do I lose my digital purchases? You will be able to re-download them "for the foreseeable future", but it is a good idea to make backup copies. Where to read the official statement? In the disc blog and in the PS3 and PS Vita.
