ShopGoodwill.com: the online Goodwill auction marketplace with vintage, electronics and “Buy It Now”

More than 135 Goodwill organizations have auctioned donations on shopgoodwill.com since 1999. Proxy auctions, fixed price, iOS/Android app and each purchase finances employment and training — with a record of ~$450 M in online sales in 2025.

If you're looking for vintage, curious electronics, or collector's items outside of eBay, ShopGoodwill.com is the official online marketplace for Goodwill stores in the US and Canada. It's not a peer-to-peer marketplace like Poshmark: all inventory comes from donations, and more than 135 independent Goodwill organizations auction from their warehouses. The site's motto sums it up: «Do some good with something great. Shop for the Good.»

What is ShopGoodwill and who operates it

According to the official help center, ShopGoodwill was born in 1999 as the first auction website created and managed by a non-profit organization. Today the platform is still operated by Goodwill of Orange County (California), while each lot is published by the regional Goodwill that received the donation.

That explains why two identical items can have different shipments: there is not a single central warehouse, but hundreds of physical stores (more than 2,500 in the Goodwill network, according to Modern Retail) who decide what goes up on the web—normally higher-value or niche pieces that would do less well on the local rack.

Figures that matter in 2026

Goodwill's online business grew with the wave of digital thrifting. Modern Retail (March 2026) cites around 450 M$ of GMV in 2025 (+22% year-on-year), the best year in 26 years of history, and more than 3,000 M$ accumulated in sales. Still, the website represents less than 10% of Goodwill's total retail — there is room for expansion.

  • 90% of the final price goes back to the local Goodwill that received the donation
  • The platform retains a small percentage for technology and marketing
  • Since 1999, purchases would have supported more than 7.5 million people looking for work (official data from the FAQ)

How auctions work (proxy bidding)

Almost all listings use automatic or proxy bidding, documented in the help center: you enter your maximum and the system bids increments on your behalf up to that ceiling. Your cap remains hidden from other bidders until the auction ends.

In practice, it is advisable to review closed auctions before bidding (ShopGoodwill allows you to see final prices) and take into account the shipping + handling cost, which varies by regional hub — sometimes more expensive than the lot itself. Many locations offer local pickup to avoid that extra cost.

Buy It Now: direct purchase without waiting

In addition to auctions, there are two Buy It Now modalities (FAQ):

  • Buy It Now at Auction — fixed price active until bids exceed that threshold; Another user can take the item at the BIN price even if someone else bid higher if they did not use the instant option.
  • Buy It Now without auction — pure fixed price; The item is reserved in "Open Orders" until you pay or someone else buys it.

What you will find in the home

The cover (/home) organizes the catalog into editorial blocks:

  • Featured Items — curated highlights
  • Hot 50 — lots with more traction
  • Shop Top Categories — main categories
  • Recommended for You — personalized if you log in

There is also a Stories section, a “My ShopGoodwill” account (orders, favorites, active auctions, saved searches, Personal Shopper) and links to donation via ReSupply in the footer.

iOS and Android mobile app

ShopGoodwill publishes native app on App Store and Google Play (org.shopgoodwill.app). The listing describes the app as “premier location for finding hidden treasures” at Goodwills nationwide — same auctions, alerts and tracking as the website, useful for last-second bids.

Tips before your first bid

  1. Read the seller hub — city/state of the sending Goodwill; Please calculate shipping before bidding.
  2. Check photos and description — everything is donated “as is”; limited returns.
  3. Use favorites and saved searches — the catalog rotates quickly; electronics and collectibles disappear in hours.
  4. Consider local pickup if you live near the listed warehouse.
  5. Remember the social impact — it's not just bargain hunting; finances training and job placement.

ShopGoodwill does not replace the neighborhood store — it complements the brick-and-mortar network with a national showcase for the rare, the vintage and the valuable. If you are interested in thrifting with a purpose, it deserves to be in your favorites along with eBay, Depop or Mercari, with the difference that here the seller is always a social mission.
