Assassination Nation (Assassination Nation, 2018) —titled Savage Nation in Spain— is the film that announced Sam Levinson before creating Euphoria. The premise fits into a tweet: in an American town called Salem, a hacker leaks the histories, messages and private photos of half of the residents. In a matter of days, collective shame mutates into violence — and four teenagers, led by Lily (Odessa Young), end up being targeted as scapegoats in a modern witch hunt.
What's it about
Levinson opens the film with an ironic warning of “trigger warnings”—violence, male toxicity, transphobia, fragile nationalism—and he delivers on all of them. The first half is hyperconnected teen satire, with split screens and social network aesthetics; The second turns to a pure survival thriller, with a domestic siege filmed in a sequence shot through the windows of the house that is already study material. The reference to the Salem trials of 1692 is not subtle, and does not pretend to be.

Why it is cult
At the box office it was a failure - it cost 7 million dollars and grossed less than 3 - but time has proven it right as a cult film: it anticipated conversations about cancel culture, doxxing and moral panic that are everyday today, and its cast aged wonderfully (Hari Nef, Bill Skarsgård, Maude Apatow and Colman Domingo, who would later coincide with Levinson in Euphoria). The NEON teaser, with its frenetic editing, won marketing awards; and the red coats at the climax became a recurring Halloween costume.
Where to see it
- Digital rental or purchase: it is the main way in 2026 — Apple TV Store, Amazon Video and Rakuten TV in Spain; Claro video and Apple TV in Latin America.
- Subscription: was on Netflix in several countries until 2024; Today it is not a stable part of any subscription catalogue, so it is worth checking JustWatch in your country.
In summary
Who is it for? For those who enjoy unbridled satire: it is violent, graphic and deliberately uncomfortable. Does it look like Euphoria? It shares neon aesthetics, a generational outlook and even actors — it is the cinematographic draft of what Levinson would do on HBO. Where to watch it? Digital rental on Apple TV or Amazon Video. It is not for all audiences; For his audience, it is unforgettable.
