Whalefall (2026): the survival thriller inside a whale — and where to see it

Whalefall (2026) adapts the bestseller by Daniel Kraus into a survival thriller produced by Imagine Entertainment (Brian Grazer, Ron Howard) and distributed by 20th Century Studios. Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) is diving off the central coast of California looking for the remains of his recently deceased father (Josh Brolin) when a huge sperm whale swallows him alive. Trapped inside with barely an hour of oxygen, he must remember the lessons his father taught him to have any chance of getting out.

What's it about

The premise—"the odds of being swallowed alive by a whale are not zero"—sums up the tone of the official teaser. Brian Duffield (Spontaneous, No One Will Save You) directs and co-writes with Kraus, the author of the novel. The cast includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd in the roles of the Gardiner family.

From the book to the big screen

Kraus published the novel in 2022 and participated in the script with Duffield. Imagine Entertainment and 3 Arts Entertainment are producing the adaptation, with Grazer and Howard serving as executive producers. The project was presented in June 2026 with a trailer in 4DX in Los Angeles, according to the statement from Disney Press.
