Shameless (US) is proof that a series about poverty can be both brutal and hilarious. American adaptation of the British one by Paul Abbott, it follows the Gallaghers of Chicago's South Side for eleven seasons: six brothers raising themselves alone while their father, Frank (a William H. Macy in a state of grace), turns alcoholism and roguery into a full-time job. Whoever starts it usually falls into the marathon: it is one of the most revisited series on streaming a decade and a half after its premiere.
Why it hooks
The driving force of the series was never Frank but the children: Fiona (Emmy Rossum), the older sister turned mother by force; Lip (Jeremy Allen White, years before winning Emmys with The Bear), the self-destructive genius; Ian (Cameron Monaghan) and his story with Mickey Milkovich (Noel Fisher), one of the most beloved LGBT couples on television; and Debbie, Carl and Liam literally growing up on screen. The series mixes wild comedy with very serious portraits of addiction, mental health, gentrification and the working class — without preaching and without mercy.

Which seasons are the best
The consensus of critics and fans: seasons 1 to 5 are the essential core, with the fourth – Fiona's fall and the family's toughest winter – as the dramatic peak. The departure of Emmy Rossum after the ninth season changes the balance, and the last two (pandemic included) function more as a long farewell than as a summit. Still, the season 11 finale closes Frank's journey on an unexpectedly moving note.
Where to watch it streaming
- Netflix: the 11 seasons are still in the catalog of several countries (in the US, with a release scheduled for October 2026 when the license expires — if you have it pending, don't let it cool).
- United States: Paramount+ with the Showtime add-on and Peacock Premium have the complete series.
- Spain: Movistar+ (Total Fiction) and HBO Max according to the catalog, in addition to purchasing by season on Apple TV and Amazon.
In summary
Where to start? For the 2011 pilot; the series is strictly chronological. Is it like the British one? The first seasons adapt plots from the original, then it flies alone. Where to watch it? Netflix while the license lasts, Paramount+ with Showtime or Peacock in the US, Movistar+ in Spain. There are 134 episodes: the perfect marathon for the rest of the year.
