La Mesías is the original Movistar Plus+ miniseries created by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, the duo known as Los Javis after Paquita Salas, Veneno and The Call. Premiered in Spain on October 11, 2023 with seven weekly episodes, the fiction has become one of the most awarded Spanish series of the decade: it went through Sundance, triumphed in Series Mania and has accumulated more than twenty awards. In 2026 it is still on everyone's lips: Movistar Plus+ promotes it with new clips and since April it has been available in the United States through Hulu and Disney+.
What The Messiah is about
The Javis define it as a thriller and family drama "in their own way": the story begins in 2012, when Enric (Roger Casamajor) suffers an anxiety attack when watching a viral video by Flos Mariae, a Christian pop group made up of six sisters who sing to the Virgin. That clip unleashes memories of a childhood marked by religious fanaticism and a mother with messianic delusions. Together with his sister Irene (Macarena García), Enric embarks on a journey to find those girls and save them from the same abuse that he experienced, unraveling the secrets of his own family over decades — from the 80s to almost the present.
The production is a collaboration between Movistar Plus+ and Suma Content, with original music by Raül Refree and Hidrogenesse. The ensemble cast includes Lola Dueñas, Carmen Machi, Ana Rujas, Albert Pla, the acting debut of Amaia, Biel Rossell Pelfort, Cecilia Roth, Nora Navas and Rossy de Palma, among others. The series was presented in the Official Section of the San Sebastián Festival 2023 and premiered the first two chapters on Movistar Plus+ on October 11; then a new episode every Thursday until closing on November 16, 2023.

The Javis tell how the idea came about
On October 10, 2023, the eve of the premiere, Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi visited El Hormiguero to present the series. In the interview with Pablo Motos they explained that the fiction was born as a kind of "dark" Little Women and ended up becoming the story of the traumas that unite and separate a family. Calvo highlighted two elements that are repeated in the real cases they investigated: religious fanaticism and art as salvation. Ambrossi, who grew up in a religious environment, described filming as a personal healing process.

First Spanish series at Sundance
In December 2023, Movistar Plus+ announced that La Mesías would be the first Spanish series to participate in the Sundance Festival. The international screening took place in the Episodic section in January 2024, consolidating the jump of fiction to the most prestigious festival circuit in the independent world. It was a milestone for Spanish streaming: until then no national production had entered that category of the Utah festival.

Can it be seen outside of Spain? Yes — and so on
La Mesías did not remain in the Movistar Plus+ domestic catalog. Almost since its premiere, Movistar Plus+ International negotiated the rights in several territories. Availability depends on country and local platform; This is what is recorded in official sources and specialized media as of June 2026:
- Spain: complete catalog on Movistar Plus+ with subscription (since the premiere in October 2023). The platform indicated at the time that it would be "available to everyone, regardless of the operator."
- United States: from April 1, 2026, exclusively on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for subscribers, according to TTV News. The agreement is managed by Miércoles Entertainment Studios.
- Latin America: HBO LATAM acquired the seven episodes through an agreement with Movistar Plus+ International, announced in October 2023 (official press release). Check in your country if the series appears on Max/HBO according to the current catalog in your region.
- France, Germany and other European countries: Arte closed rights for France and Germany, as well as Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Andorra, Monaco and Luxembourg, according to Wikipedia and distribution statements.
- Other territories: Movistar Plus+ International continues to manage additional sales. If it does not appear on your local platform, it is advisable to check Arte, Max/HBO or the Movistar Plus+ search engine in your country before resorting to unofficial methods.
