What it's about

The film takes up the unfinished work that Federico García Lorca left half-finished and the theatrical production The Dark Stone, signed by Alberto Conejero. The Javis set it in Madrid in 1936, on the eve of the Civil War: a drama of identity, repressed desire and political violence that mixes the Lorca language with its baroque and musical aesthetics. With 155 minutes of footage, it is his most ambitious commitment in long format.

The cast highlights the film debut of Guitarricadelafuente, along with Miguel Bernardeau, Penelope Cruz, Lola Dueñas, Glenn Close, Antonio de la Torre and Natalia de Molina. The soundtrack is provided by Refree, a regular collaborator of Los Javis in series such as La Mesías.

Cannes and why it matters

The world premiere took place in the Official Selection of the Cannes 2026 Festival, where Ambrossi and Calvo took home the Palme d'Or for Best Director —along with Pawel Pawlikowski for Jerusalem—.
