A point-blank shooting shook the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood in Montreal (Canada) this Monday, June 22, 2026. Three people died: an agent of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), a civilian and the armed suspect, killed by the uniformed officers. A second officer, a woman, was seriously injured and hospitalized.

The confrontation was recorded in videos spread on networks, including those published by Breaking911, which show a man in camouflage clothing opening fire against the police. A second clip from the same account suggests that an officer mistakenly shot a civilian during the shooting; Authorities have not confirmed who caused the civilian's death.

How the attack developed

According to the head of the SPVM, Fady Dagher, and media such as CTV News and the BBC, it all started around 11:35 (local time) with a 911 call: a witness saw a gun sticking out of a window, heard gunshots and alerted the police.

The agents went to the area of De Courtrai and Trans Island avenues. The suspect, dressed in camouflage and armed with a long-range rifle—a means specialized in identifying a possible SKS in the images—opened fire in the street. Police blocked Highway 15, suspended part of the metro's orange line and ordered residents to confine themselves between Côte-des-Neiges Road, MacDonald, Highway 40 and Queen Mary.

Quebec issued an emergency alert about an armed suspect in the area; He removed it around 3:00 p.m. local time, when Dagher appeared before the press.

Three dead and one serious officer

Shortly before 1:45 p.m., the SPVM confirmed in X: "It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our agents in the line of duty." Minutes later he reported that the suspect had been neutralized, that a civilian had also died and that a second agent was injured.

Dagher described the day as "a nightmare" and recalled that it is the first time in 24 years that an SPVM agent has died on duty (since 2002). Of the fallen officer he said: "He was a great, great, great police officer, with a lot of credibility and very passionate."

The injured officer, initially in critical condition, was later stable and "no longer fears for her life," according to updates cited by The Jerusalem Post. The name of the deceased officer was not immediately released.

Viral videos and the civilian controversy

Breaking911 published images of the confrontation that exceeded 13 million views: the shooter is seen in camouflage and bodies on the pavement. A second post states that an officer "allegedly" killed a civilian during the shooting.

Important: Dagher did not answer in the press conference who shot the civilian, according to The Globe and Mail. Israeli media mentioned Rabbi Michael Moshe Mizrahi as a possible civilian victim; The ZAKA organization first identified him as dead and then corrected that he was injured and in surgery, generating confusion. Montreal police officially maintain a dead civilian without confirming identity in the first balance sheet.

Neighborhood context and unknown motive

Côte-des-Neiges is one of Montreal's densest and most diverse districts, with a historic Jewish community and several religious centers. Dagher warned that it is too early to talk about motivation. The Globe and Mail points out that reports are circulating about a possible manifesto sent to the media, but the boss did not confirm it: "There is similar information about that," he simply said.

The Canadian Prime Minister and the Premier of Quebec, Christine Fréchette, expressed condolences and support to law enforcement agencies. The investigation remains open; Experts will analyze whether there was more than one shooter or just the weapon of the killed suspect.
