Seventeen years after Shrek Forever (2010), DreamWorks and Universal Pictures confirmed that the saga returns with Shrek 5. On June 16, 2026 the first official trailer was published — collected on href="https://x.com/DiscussingFilm/status/2066901806966350185" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">@DiscussingFilm—and in a matter of hours it opened two fronts of debate: the new animation style, cleaner and less "dirty" than that of the originals, and the dubbing in Latin Spanish, where Donkey is still Eugenio Derbez but Shrek no longer sounds like Alfonso Obregón. The film will hit theaters on June 30, 2027.

What to expect from Shrek 5

The fifth installment returns to Shrek, Fiona and Donkey with their original English voices - Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy - and adds Zendaya, Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo as the teenage children Felicia, Fergus and Farkle. The plot takes them to the city of Further Further Away, where the ogre and the donkey end up in prison after a chase; There Donkey performs "Roxanne" by The Police in front of the inmates.

The trailer includes nods to recent pop culture: Gingy appears "caked up" (with exaggerated buttocks), there is a parody of the snowman Olaf from Frozen and it is hinted that Shrek's children no longer fit in the comfort of the swamp. It is, in the words of ComingSoon, a mix of generational nostalgia and meta humor that tries to connect with those who grew up with the saga and with a younger audience.

When it comes out: schedule and delay

Shrek 5 was initially scheduled for December 2026. In August 2025, DiscussingFilm picked up Universal's announcement: the film was delayed to June 30, 2027. The current calendar looks like this:

  • June 16, 2026: first official trailer (English and Latin Spanish).
  • June 30, 2027: US and international theatrical release.

The six-month delay fits with the production of a sequel that has been in development for years and with the summer competitive window, where DreamWorks usually positions its family blockbusters.

Controversy over dubbing in Latin Spanish

For millions of viewers in Latin America and Spain, the identity of Shrek passes through the voice of Alfonso Obregón, a Mexican actor who dubbed the ogre since the first film (2001). In the Latin trailer from June 2026 that voice does not appear: Derbez is heard as Donkey – confirmed after months of negotiation – and Dulce Guerrero as Fiona, but Shrek sounds different. Universal has not officially announced who replaces Obregón; Rumors circulate online about actors like Faisy, without confirmation from the studio.

According to Infobae and the Hollywood Reporter en español, Obregón did not reach an agreement with the production. The actor had set conditions to return: notable credits in promotional material for the Spanish-speaking market (even on posters, not just the name of Mike Myers), directing the Latin dubbing and financial compensation in line with the success he attributes to his work in the franchise. DreamWorks did not agree to those demands; Derbez, on the other hand, did close his return after agreeing to freedom to adapt jokes to the script.

El País México summarizes the division between fans: those who defend that actors have the right to negotiate working conditions and those who fear that changing the voice of Shrek – the central character – will affect the emotional quality of the film in Spanish, although Donkey and Fiona maintain their historical interpreters. Obregón, in previous interviews cited by Hollywood Reporter, said that "he is already Shrek" in the collective memory and that, if he does not participate, "nothing is going to happen" — although he recognizes his affection for the role.

Status as of June 20, 2026: The trailer confirms the audible replacement of Shrek in Latin, but Universal has not published the name of the new voice actor. The controversy is still open and several official trailers have YouTube comments disabled.

Criticism of the new animation style

Parallel to the dubbing debate, the trailer unleashed criticism for the visual redesign of Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and the children. DreamWorks applied a more polished finish, with smoother skin, larger eyes, and more "cartoon" contours than the slightly rough, cartoonish look of the 2001-2010 films. DiscussingFilm published a comparison «2010 ➡️ 2027» that exceeded one and a half million views; Cartoons On The Moon compiled the evolution of Shrek's children between installments.

In forums and networks, comments appear such as "they look like they were made with AI" or "they lost the soul of the original design." Unlike the Sonic case (2019), where Paramount redesigned the character after viral pressure, DreamWorks has not announced changes to the model after the trailer. Several media outlets point out that the style fits with the studio's recent productions—cleaner, prepared for 4K and merchandising—but clashes with the aesthetic that defined Shrek as an antidote to Disney's perfect princesses.

Other details of the trailer also generated conversation: Donkey's family—Dragon wife and babies—appear briefly, a topic picked up by accounts like @Medyanin50Tonu in X. For many followers, the problem is not It is not only aesthetic but also in tone: absurd humor and adult references coexist with a visual finish that some perceive as too infantilized.
