If your dog wanders onto trails without a signal, a conventional GPS stops reporting as soon as it loses LTE. Fi Ultra, presented on July 8, 2026, promises to close that hole: it is the first consumer wearable with T-Satellite (SpaceX's direct-to-cell network Starlink in partnership with T-Mobile) designed to locate dogs in almost all of the United States, even without cell towers. Added is always-on dual-band GPS, automatic LTE ↔ satellite switching and Richiamo's Fi CallBack™ system for sound and vibration. We review what it offers compared to the Fi Series 3, how much it costs and what limitations it has.

What is Fi Ultra and why Starlink matters

Fi has been making GPS dog collars for years (Series 3, Series 3+, Fi Mini). They all depend on LTE: if the dog leaves the coverage area, the map freezes. Fi Ultra (model U1) adds a satellite backup: when there is no cell phone, the device switches to T-Satellite, T-Mobile's service that uses Starlink's LEO constellation for data messages to phones — and now, for the first time in a non-smartphone product, to this tracker.

According to SpaceNews, Fi Ultra is the first non-mobile consumer product to integrate Starlink Direct-to-Cell as a core feature. The switching is automatic: the owner does not choose the network; The module uses LTE when it can and satellite when necessary.

Fi CallBack™: richiamo without downloads

In addition to the map, Fi Ultra incorporates a piezoelectric speaker and a vibration motor for Fi CallBack™: a training system that calls the dog with sound and vibration from a distance, without an electric shock collar. There are three intensity levels for each stimulus. The idea is to combine satellite tracking with a “come back here” route when the animal is close but out of sight.

App functions

  • Real-time location via LTE, satellite, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
  • Geofences: alerts if the dog leaves a defined area.
  • Lost mode: notifies other nearby Fi users.
  • Dual compatibility: can be used together with a Fi Series 3+ or Fi Mini in the same app (LTE in urban areas, Ultra on excursions).

Price and membership

Like the rest of Fi products, Ultra requires subscription (cellular and satellite connectivity). According to the statement from Fi — Business Wire and the official store:

  • New customers: $199 (hardware) + $20 activation + $189/year membership (or $339/2 years).
  • Current Fi customers: $299 flat rate; maintains the membership they already pay for.

The Verge, which tested a prototype, points out that for those who already pay Fi the $299 fee is more profitable in the long term than buying the Ultra as a standalone product.

Honest limitations

  • Battery ~2 days: less than many LTE-only trackers (tradeoff by continuous GPS and satellite module).
  • US only: T-Satellite operates on US soil; no international plans announced.
  • Subscription required: Without active membership, the value of the hardware is limited.
  • Satellite ≠ video: are location updates, not streaming; In dead zones there may be higher latency than with LTE.

For whom does it make sense?

Fi Ultra is not for the daily urban walk: a Fi Series 3+ or an LTE competitor is enough in the city. It shines for hiking, hunting, farm agility, RV travel and rescue — scenarios where losing your dog on the map is unacceptable. If you're already a Fi member, the clip on the existing collar and the $299 make the upgrade “mountain day” insurance.
