The gamer community and Spanish-language networks woke up this Monday, July 6, 2026 with devastating news: Sebastián Funes, the Argentine YouTuber and streamer known as Chatterbox, died along with his father in a multiple crash on National Route 5, near Pehuajó (province of Buenos Aires). He was 27 years old and had accumulated close to 1.7 million subscribers on YouTube.
The alert spread quickly on X through posts such as UHN Plus, which summarized the incident: Funes and his father died in a head-on collision as the family returned to Buenos Aires after attending their grandmother's funeral; the mother and 12-year-old sister survived and were hospitalized. What happened on Route 5
According to the first police and journalistic reports collected by MDZ Online and Infobae, the accident occurred around 2:30 pm on Sunday, July 5 at kilometer 349 of Route 5, on a straight stretch in the vicinity of Guanaco, a town in the Pehuajó district.
Three vehicles were involved: a Honda Civic—where the Funes family was traveling—, a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck and a cage truck with a trailer. The main hypothesis, which must be confirmed by the prosecution, is that one of the vehicles tried to overtake the truck and ended up in a head-on collision with the truck that was traveling in the opposite direction.
After the impact, the family car was thrown toward the shoulder—partly covered in water, according to witnesses cited by the local press—and overturned. When the Guanaco Volunteer Firefighters arrived, Sebastián Funes and his father Juan Manuel Funes remained in the front seats and had already died.
Sebastián's mother (52 years old) and his 12-year-old sister were traveling in the back seat. Both managed to get out of the vehicle on their own and were taken to the Juan Carlos Aramburu Municipal Hospital in Pehuajó. The minor had blows and a cut wound on her forehead; the woman, in a state of shock. The occupants of the van – identified by local media as Manuel Alonso (60) and Jorge Savinel (70), from Carlos Casares – also received medical attention. The driver of the cargo truck was uninjured.
They were returning from their grandmother's wake
The human background aggravates the tragedy. The family, originally from Pehuajó but residing in Caballito (City of Buenos Aires) for several years, had traveled to the interior to say goodbye to Sebastián's grandmother, who died on July 2, 2026 at the age of 87. The accident occurred on the return to the capital, when they still had to travel hundreds of kilometers along Route 5.
Juan Manuel Funes, 54, was known in his hometown by the nickname "Chocha" and drove the Honda Civic in which the family was traveling. His son occupied the passenger seat.
Who was Chatterbox
Sebastián Funes built one of the largest gamer audiences in Argentina under the pseudonym Chatterbox (also spelled Chaterbox on some platforms). His YouTube channel exceeded 1.6–1.7 million subscribers; on TikTok he exceeded one million followers and on Twitch he had more than 114,000, according to the profile collected by Infobae.
He began publishing on networks in 2018, first on TikTok, and found the format that catapulted him on YouTube. In 2023 he celebrated having surpassed one million subscribers on that platform. His content mixed video games —Fortnite, Stumble Guys, The Backrooms Game— with reactions, challenges and lives in which he maintained close contact with his audience, mostly teenagers and young people.
He participated in the ecosystem of Argentine creators: he broadcast on Twitch and was linked to events on the local circuit, including the Coscu Army Awards promoted by streamer Martín «Coscu» Pérez Disalvo. One of his most viewed videos —published in March 2022— exceeded five million views, according to MDZ Online.

The gamer community reacts
After hearing the news, hundreds of followers and colleagues in the field published farewell messages. TN collected some of the first reactions: producer Valentín Costabel wrote on Instagram that "I never imagined that the day would come when I had to say goodbye to a friend" and remembered "Seba" as "one of the few people in this field whom I could really call a friend."
Other creators like Unxavi shared photographs and messages of pain on Instagram stories. In the comments under viral posts, phrases such as “you made history” are repeated—an echo of the bond that Funes cultivated with his community for years.
What's next
The prosecutor's office on duty in Pehuajó opened an investigation to precisely determine the mechanics of the crash, the responsibilities and whether the section where the accident occurred had visibility or pavement conditions that could have influenced it. The occupants of the truck and the witnesses of the cage truck will be key in the investigations.
Meanwhile, the Funes family faces a double mourning: that of the grandmother, whose wake they had just left behind, and that of Sebastián and Juan Manuel. The mother and younger sister remain under medical observation.
Update (July 6, 2026): News based on the report from UHN Plus and confirmed by Infobae, MDZ Online, La Gaceta and TN. We will update if the prosecutor's office or the hospital release official reports.
